Current elections opportunity to resolve Kashmir issue: Mufti
11/26/2008 11:56:12 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
LOLAB (KUPWARA), Nov 26: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today called for speeding up and expanding the Indo-Pak peace process to find substantial solution to the problem of Jammu & Kashmir and addressing the legitimate aspirations of its people.
Addressing an election rally at Lalpora in Lolab constituency of district Kupwara, Sayeed said the encouraging participation of people in the ongoing polls should not be misconstrued as the problem having disappeared without addressing it. "The renewed trust people of the State have reposed in the democratic institutions, offers a fresh opportunity to work through peaceful and reconciliatory means towards addressing all the dimensions of the Kashmir issue in a manner that balances and promotes enduring political and economic stability in the State and the region," he said and added that PDP visualizes a space of dignity, opportunity and prosperity for the people of Jammu & Kashmir in the paradigm of friendship and cooperative relationship between India and Pakistan.
"The ongoing peace process has reached a critically positive stage and this historic opportunity must now translate into concrete measures for the betterment of the people in Jammu & Kashmir who have suffered immensely because of the hostility in the region," Sayeed said and added that the emerging situation necessitates a set of substantive political and economic measures to consolidate the situation to the extent that holds a promise for enduring peace and prosperity in Jammu & Kashmir. "The situation now unquestionably demands initiation of measures like revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and thinning of the troops deployed on internal security in the State," he said and added that such measures have now become unavoidable to ensure a substantive turn-around in the situation by reposing greater trust in the people.
"At the same time we shall have to move ahead on other confidence building measures including rehabilitation of the dependents of all the victims of violence," Sayeed said and added that men, women and children, irrespective of age, status or political affiliation have been traumatized by the turmoil and they need to be supported to live dignified lives. "If PDP comes to power, we would accomplish its unfinished agenda of ensuring durable peace, dignity and prosperity for the people of Jammu & Kashmir," he said and added that the people want a government that would salvage their bruised dignity and also rekindles the hope of a prosperous future for their children.
Accusing the National Conference (NC) of reverting back to its age-old tactics of deceit and emotional blackmail to grab power, Sayeed said the party that put the whole Hurriet Conference leadership behind the bars before 2002 polls, is today using the issue of their detention to garner votes. "When we started releasing the Hurriet Conference leaders in 2002, a top NC leader went rushing to Delhi to stall their release and even labeled us as pro-militants for it," he said and added that the NC leaders Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah had even criticized PDP's "healing touch" policy as being pro-militant and pro-Hurriet.
Sayeed said it was the then National Conference Government that implemented the dreadful POTA in Jammu & Kashmir to crush the public sentiment, even before the infamous law was applied in any part of the country. "Dr Farooq Abdullah as chief minister is on record to have stated that he would put the Hurriet leaders behind the bars for ever so that they rot in jails," he said and added that after sensing the public mood, his son is now vainly trying all kinds of exploitative and emotional tactics to lure the voters. "But people of the State are now emancipated enough to get carried away by NC rhetoric," he said. PDP candidate for Lolab constituency Advocate Abdul Haq Khan also addressed the rally.
