| PDP flays NC for politicising separatists’ detention | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 26: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today accused National Conference (NC) of politicising the issue of Hurriyat leaders' detention in order to grab power in Jammu and Kashmir. "The NC has reverted to its age-old tactics of deceit and emotional blackmail to grab power," PDP patron and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said, referring to a statement by NC President Omar Abdullah that his party would set free all Hurriyat leaders if voted to power. "The party (NC) that had put the Hurriyat Conference leadership behind the bars before 2002 polls, is today using the issue of their detention to garner votes," he alleged while addressing an election rally at Lalpora in Lolab constituency in Kupwara district. Omar during an election rally in Handwara area of the district had yesterday said : "Insha'Allah (God willing) we will release all Hurriyat leaders within a week after formation of government. They (separatists) have democratic right to reach out to the people and present their view point." The PDP patron further alleged that "when we started releasing Hurriyat leaders in 2002, a top NC leader rushed to Delhi to stall their release and even labelled us as pro-militants for it." "NC leaders Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah had even criticised PDP's healing touch policy as being pro-militant and pro-Hurriyat," Sayeed charged. It was the then NC Government that implemented the "dreadful" POTA in the state even before the "infamous law" was applied in certain other parts of the country, he said. "When Farooq Abdullah was the chief minister, he was even caught on record as saying that he would put the Hurriyat leaders behind the bars for ever so that they rot in jails," Sayeed claimed. |
