| J&K Sport Climbers team excels in Nationals | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 27: The J&K sport climbers brought laurels to the state, winning two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the 14th National Sport Climbing Championship held at Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi. Competing in girls category, Harjot Kour, a class 10th student of MNDP School, R S Pura, who recently represented the country in the Asian Youth Championship at Japan, won one gold, one silver and one bronze medal in Lead, Speed and Bouldering events respectively. Another promising climber, Shivani Raj Kaith, defending champion in Lead climber, won a gold and a bronze medal in Bouldering and Speed Climbing in the same category. However, she could not defend her title in Lead and finished fourth. Bhawna Sharma, the senior most climber of J&K also raised visions of a medal in Bouldering competitions in the women’s category when she entered the final round by securing fourth place in the semi-finals but in the face of a stiff competition from international climbers she slipped to 6th place in the final. “Rajeev Sharma in boys category and Akshay Kumar in sub-junior group also performed well to secure eighth place in their respective categories,” informed general secretary of the Association, Dr C K Khajuria. Riding on the success of J&K climbers, the North Zone finished runners-up to South Zone in the overall medals tally. Mr Sonam Sidharth was manager of the eight-member team which comprised of Bhavna Sharma, Rohini Chib, Harjot Kour, Shivani Raj, Anil Kumar, Rajeev Sharma, Akshay Kumar and Ashish Kumar. The state team was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council. On return from Delhi, the team along with secretary of the Association, Dr C K Khajuria called on the Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, P S Gill. Mr Gill congratulated the team for excellent performance and promised to provide necessary support for the promotion of the game. |
