EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 27: Host Jammu and Kashmir boys today made a winning start to launch their campaign on a positive note in the qualifying round of the 31st Sub-Junior National Volleyball Championships organized by Volleyball Association of J&K at MA Stadium, here. Placed in group-C, J&K boys defeated Uttaranchal in straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-40) to consolidate their position. However, the tight schedule on the opening day forced the organizers to hold a number of matches under flood lights. When the last reports were filed, J&K girls were yet to play their group-D league tie against Delhi. Earlier, the week-long championships were declared open by the Advisor to Governor, Dr S S Baloria. Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof Amitabh Mattoo presided over the inaugural function. Prominent among others present were Director General Youth Services and Sports, P S Gill, Inspector General of Police, Raja Ajaz Ali, president Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Ram Sahai and president J&K Olympic Association, Rangil Singh. Earlier, president Volleyball Association of J&K and working president of the organizing committee, Raj Daluja welcomed the chief guest and other distinguished gathering present. Giving details about the event, he said, “About 700 boys and girls from 25 states and Union Territories across the country are taking part. In all, there are 48 teams, including 23 in girls section, in fray for the top honours.” Soon after the championship was declared open, captain of the J&K girls’ team, Rekha Devi administered the oath of fair play and sportsman spirit to the participating teams.
