| Police use force against protesters at Baramulla, several injured | | Anti-poll campaign | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Baramulla, Nov 27: Several persons suffered injuries when police used force to disperse women protesters at Old Town Baramulla Thursday morning. According to Press Bureau of India, about 30 women from Old Town gathered outside Police Station at around 9.00 a.m. and started chanting slogans against the civil and police administration, demanding release of nearly 40 youth who were arrested since Saturday when protests broke out in the town after police and paramilitary CRPF personnel killed two young boys. While women were engaged in shouting slogans, a contingent of police consisting of 200 personnel assisted by a Fire Services vehicle allegedly pounced on them at around 10.30 a.m., sprinkling water at high speed and using canes to disperse the women protesters. The condition of the drenched protesters, with mud clinging on their clothes and canes hitting their bodies, provoked the passersby and they also joined the protest, PBI said. Police burst tear smoke canisters and threw canes at anyone coming their way to quell the protesters. Several persons suffered injuries and bruises in the mayhem that ensued the tear gas shelling and lathi charge. Soon after the incident, whole of the town wore a deserted look with people preferring to remain indoors. The atmosphere at Old Town was tense during the whole day with police on high alert to thwart any recurring of the protests. The derailed situation threw Traffic off the roads in Baramulla Market area. Schools, shops and other business establishments remained closed due to the situation prevailing in Baramulla, PBI added. Media people too were not spared by the police and for the last few days, they are also being targeted by police. Shahid Imran (Sen channel), Tariq Ahmad (Vaadi Tv), Bilal Ahmad (B Tv), Reyaz Ahmad (Kashmir Images) and Mushtaq Ahmad of PBI have been beaten up by the police for covering the happenings in Baramulla. Meanwhile, continuing with alleged arrest of civilians, police have made several arrests since Wednesday evening. Some of them have been identified as Zahoor Ahmad Najar son of Bashir Ahmad of Mir Sahib Mohalla; Arshid son of Abdul Hamid Bhat of Tawheed Gunj; Zahoor Ahmad Dar and Abdul Majeed Dar, both from Syed Kareem;Abdul Majeed Saleh of Kakarhama; Aijaz Ahmad of Mohalla Jadeed and Mushtaq Ahmad Hajam of Khwaja Bagh. |
