| Poll vault: Mehbooba adamant at dragging Omar to Malegaon mud | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, Nov 27: National Conference president Omar Abdullah may have tried to prove himself as a victim of mudslinging but the arch rival Mehbooba Mufti is adamant on dragging him to the Valley’s poll battle via Malegaon blast probe mud.
Omar had issued a legal notice to Mehbooba Mufti and anther senior Peoples Democratic Party leader Tariq Hameed Qarra for associating his name with the alleged Malegaon blast mastermind Dayanand Pande. This notice was issued after Mehbooba and Qarra circulated to the press an old photograph showing Omar and Pande in the same frame.
Reiterating her demand for a thorough probe into the reported association of alleged Malegaon blast accused Swami Dayanand Pandey with the National Conference (NC) President Omar Abdullah, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has accused the NC President of trying to hoodwink the issue.
Replying, through her counsel, to the legal notice issued by Omar Abdullah, the PDP President stated that she stands by her demand for a thorough investigation into the alleged association of the NC President with Dayanand Pandey. "People want to know what Omar Abdullah was doing there with Dayanand Pandey in that function," she questions.
Mehbooba, in her reply, said ‘the contents of your notice do not constitute an offence of defamation as defined in section 499 RPC. None of the ingredients as provided under section 499 RPC are made out from your notice so the notice sent by you to my client is uncalled for’.
It is admitted by you in your notice that a photograph of your client with Swami Dayanand Pandey was taken at a social function organized by Durganath Trust. My client referring to the same photograph in a press conference on 21st of November 2008, which was covered by all the newspapers of the state have quoted my client saying as "We want a high level probe into all aspects of activities of terrorist Pandey. He has been a guest of Sinha and also shared dais with Omar Abdullah during a function" Newspapers have further quoted my client having said "We want to know what was Omar doing there. Why was not any other prominent Muslim leader invited to attend the function" My client wanted a thorough probe in any connection of Omar Abdullah with Swami Dayanand Pandey who is allegedly the main accused in the Malegaon blasts which cannot be construed as defamatory.
Any civil or criminal proceedings filed by your client including suit for damages of Rs one crore against my client shall be defended at your risk and cost. You may further inform your client that my client stands by her demand for a thorough investigation to determine any connection between your client and Swami Dayanand Pandey. It appears that in order to avoid any probe your client had sent the notice under reply to my client.
Meanwhile, Mehbooba today said the latest highly condemnable, outrageous and tragic violence in Mumbai in which scores of innocent lives were lost, have added a quite intriguing and dangerous dimension to the Malegaon blast probe, as the chief of Maharashtra ATS alongwith his team investigating the Malegaon blasts has been eliminated in mysterious circumstances in these attacks. |
