| Fourth phase: day of independents, women | | 256 condenders for 18 segments; 82 independents, 10 women | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 28: It will be day of independents, smaller parties and assertion of women power in 18 constituencies spread across four districts of Jammu and Kashmir as campaign intensifies for the fourth round of polling slated for December 7. An average size of 14 candidates per constituency are seeking elections in 18 segments of four districts in the fourth phase which has, so far, highest number of independent and women contestants. Out of the 256 contestants, there are 10 women in fray in the four districts of Baramulla, Budgam, Reasi and Udhampur, which are going to polls in the fourth phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008 on December 7. The 18 constituencies where polling is being held in the fourth phase of elections are Uri, Rafiabad, Sopore, Sangrama, Baramulla, Gulmarg and Pattan in Baramulla district, Chadoora, Budgam, Beerwah, Khan Sahib and Charar-i-Sharief in Budgam district, Gulabgarh, Reasi and Gool-Arnas in Reasi district and Udhampur, Chenani and Ramnagar in Udhampur district. Among these 10 women contestants, five will contest in Baramulla district, three in Reasi while as two women are in fray in Budgam district. There is no woman contestant in Udhampur district. While three women contested in the first phase, another two were in fray in the second phase. As many as five women will contest in the third phase in Kupwara district for which polling will be held on November 30. Those women who are contesting from Baramulla district include Haleema Bano of BJP in Uri Assembly constituency, Raja Begum of JKNPP and Shakeela Bano, independent, from Baramulla Assembly constituency, Rafiqa Bano of ANC from Pattan Assembly constituency and Irshada Akhtar, independent, from Gulmarg Assembly constituency. Similarly, in Reasi district, Mumtaz Kouser of PDP will contest from Gulabgarh Assembly constituency, Meenakshi Sharma, independent, from Reasi and Shamshad Bano of PDP from Gool-Arnas Assembly constituency. In Budgam district, Parveena Akhtar Bhat of JKNPP will contest from Khan Sahib Assembly constituency while as Aisha Parveen, independent, is in fray from Beerwah Assembly constituency. As many as 82 independent contestants, the highest number so far in the ongoing Assembly elections, are in fray out of the 256 candidates contesting from 18 constituencies in Baramulla, Budgam, Reasi and Udhampur districts, which will go to polls in the fourth phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008 on December 7. Among them, the highest number of 35 independents are contesting in Baramulla district while as 18 are in fray in Budgam district. In Jammu division’s Udhampur district, 15 independents are contesting while as 14 are in fray in Reasi district. Constituency-wise, Sopore in Baramulla district has the highest number of 13 independents in fray out of the total of 24 contestants. Of the 35 independents in the ring in Baramulla district, four are in fray in Uri, two in Rafiabad, 13 in Sopore, six in Sangrama, three each in Baramulla and Gulmarg and four in Pattan Assembly constituency. A total of 105 contestants are in fray in Baramulla district. Similarly, out of 18 independent contestants in Budgam district, four are in fray in Chadoora, seven in Budgam, four in Beerwah, two in Khan Sahib and one in Charar-i-Sharief constituency. A total of 70 contestants are in fray in Budgam district. Out of 15 candidates contesting as independents in Udhampur district, six are in fray from Udhampur, five in Chenani and four in Ramnagar constituency. A total of 42 contestants are in fray in Udhampur district. Similarly, out of 14 independents in fray in Reasi district, four are contesting from Gulabgarh, nine from Reasi and one from Gool-Arnas constituency. A total of 39 contestants are in fray in Reasi district. |
