JU organises Cartooning Exhibition to Commemorate National Cartoonists Day

JAMMU, May 4: To commemorate National Cartoonists Day, the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organized a Cartooning Exhibition featuring prominent works of eminent cartoonists of JKUT, Sh. Manoj Chopra, Chander Shakhar and Raj Bhagat. The event was conducted under a series of events which the University of Jammu is organizing under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar, University of Jammu was the Chief Guest on the occasion who appreciated the sharp creativity and wisdom of the cartoonists who had highlighted different social issues from different perspectives. He also complimented the team consisting of Prof. Prakash Antahal (Dean Students Welfare), Prof. Vishav Raksha (Chairperson Campus Cultural Committee), Prof. Sanjana Kaul (Co-Chairperson, CCC) Dr. Anil Gupta (Associate Dean SW) Dr. Garima Gupta and Dr. Pritam Singh (Assistant Deans, SW) and members of Campus Cultural Committee for consistently organizing cultural, literary and fine-arts events which provide a learning platform to the students and scholars. He also suggested to regularly organize such activities for the benefit of the stakeholders.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Prakash Antahal informed that the Department of Students Welfare has been continuously trying to organize events of different genres for the overall personality development of the students. He asserted that cultural, literary and fine arts activities provide immense benefit to the performers and audience as well. He complimented the cartoonists of today's exhibition whose works would definitely provide creative stimulus to the students.
Prof. Vishav Raksha informed that the Campus Cultural Committee, under the aegis of the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu is organizing a vibrant series of performance/training based events for the students under celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
An assorted collection of immensely creative cartoons on different relevant and contemporary issues were exhibited for students, scholars, teaching and non-teaching staff of the University and members of civil society. Each and every cartoon received accolades and appreciation from the people for their out of box imagination and execution. Manoj Chopra an extremely sharp-witted cartoonist and an alumnus of the University of Jammu has the credit to get approximately 7000 cartoons created by him published so far. He has received various prestigious awards and fellowships and has been adjudicating various reputed festivals and contests. He holds regular exhibitions and lectures on art on cartoon making. He has been actively drawing cartoons on political and other social issues for the last decade and his creations are being regularly published in reputed newspapers. Chander Shekhar is an innovative cartoonist who has been inspired by the well-recognized cartoonist of India R. K. Laxman. He has earned a big name as a cartoonist not only in Jammu and Kashmir but at the National level. He believes that the elegant way to describe the world, cartooning is an art to give a smile on the face of the common masses which have seen as 'Humour with a Pinch of Salt'. A creative medium to correspond is also visual semiotics and visual persuasion medium. A cartoon can be simple or complex and can be drawn in almost any style, but it's not an exact duplication of reality. It's a representation of the artist's perceptions of the world, and every person sees the same thing differently. Shekhar is the first cartoonist of Jammu who has exhibited three international cartoon exhibitions in Jammu and Kashmir. Sh. Raj Bhagat is a well-known Editorial Cartoonist, who is currently Editorial Cartoonist in State Times, he has been doing brilliant Cartoons, Illustrations and Caricatures for the last 10 years, apart from this Raj Bhagat ji is also associated with Theater and Film, Raj Bhagat's cartoons got viral on social media during the Covid-19 period.
The event was coordinated by Mansi Mantoo and Sumeet Sharma. Kulbhushan Thakur, Arif Paul, Priyatosh, Garima, Sharmila, Lakshya, Jagmeet Kour and Niharika looked after the logistics.
