Unite for Jammu’s cause
5/6/2022 12:59:37 AM

Finally Delimitation Panel has redrawn assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir and has submitted its final report.
Now, Jammu will have 43 assembly seats and Kashmir 47. For the first time in the history of J&K nine seats have been reserved for Schedule Tribes. It’s after seventy years that some justice has been done with the Jammu region. This will provide a chance to legislators from Jammu to have a say in the government formation and any Jammu based party can be in a position to form the government.
For the past 70-years, Kashmir centric leaders treated leaders from Jammu as second fiddles and never allowed any Dogra to become the chief minister of the erstwhile state.
People of Jammu are hoping to see a man from their region holding the chief minister’s office. They have waited for the past seven decades for this change to occur. Redrawing of assembly constituencies has provided an opportunity to the politicians of the Jammu region to set aside their differences and put up a joint front to restore the pristine glory of Jammu region.
The report submitted by the Delimitation Commission has ended the discrimination that Jammu region witnessed for so many years. Now, the ball is in the court of Jammu based leaders. They have to put their act together and provide a nationalist government to J&K. They have to come together for Jammu’s cause. The political formations in Jammu should take a cue from National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party. Leaders of both the parties have shown willingness to contest the forthcoming assembly elections jointly.
After August 5, 2019—when the Centre announced its decision to revoke J&K’s special status and divide it into two union territories—political scenario changed completely and the redrawing of assembly constituencies opened up a new chapter in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir based parties are aware of the fact that it won’t be an easy task for them to come into power again and call the shots. These parties have also realized that Jammu in coming days will become an equal stakeholder instead of it becoming a junior partner. If Jammu based politicians remain divided it will be a big loss. They have to unite for a common cause.
