Congress in disarray
5/8/2022 11:16:43 PM
The Congress Party in Jammu and Kashmir continues to be at the crossroads. The infighting among the party leaders has brought the party to the brink.
The Congress seems to have lost ground in the Jammu region. Its leaders have disappeared from the scene and many of them have joined other parties.
Loyalists of former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad recently met AICC general secretary and incharge J&K affairs Rajni Patil for the first time after she assumed the charge. They had met her to resolve the differences but the meeting according to the media reports didn’t yield the desired results.
The faction ridden Congress faces an uphill task in the forthcoming assembly elections. It’s not the BJP only that has made inroads into the bastions of the Congress Party. There are many small parties that have appeared on the scene and the entry of the Aam Admi Party into Jammu region is all set to make things difficult for the Congress.
If the Congress high command fails to mend the bridges with Azad loyalists then the party may find it very difficult to tackle the challenge posed by the BJP and the other parties.
Leaders loyal to Azad are demanding that he should be declared as the chief ministerial candidate and be handed over the party affairs. Their major demand is to give Azad a lead role in Jammu and Kashmir but the Congress high command hasn’t shown that much interest in empowering Azad.
As on date the Azad group is at loggerheads with the party high command and is refusing to relent. Many influential leaders of the Congress Party in Jammu region have crossed the line and changed loyalties. Azad is the only choice for the party high command. He is the only one who can revive the Congress Party in Jammu region.
After meeting Rajni Patil loyalists of Azad have put the ball in the court of the Congress leadership. Now, the party high command has to take a call and decide what could be done to make any impact in the assembly elections in J&K.
The Delimitation Commission that was assigned the job to redraw assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir has already submitted its final report. It means that poll bugle can be sounded anytime. The Congress will have to put its act together before the elections in J&K are announced.
