Another woman loses life
5/9/2022 11:36:21 PM
In a gruesome incident a young woman in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district was beaten to death allegedly by her in-laws and she became the latest victim of domestic violence.
The woman’s death triggered outrage in Jammu and Kashmir and left the people shell shocked. Even in 2022, women are harassed and tortured on one or other pretext.
Domestic violence is nothing new; it has been a common phenomenon across the country. Most of the women in one or other way fall prey to the violence in their new homes.
It has been observed that a woman resigns to her fate in most of the cases and accepts the never ending cycle of violence and discrimination as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a partner or a single woman in her lifetime.
During the past few years many stringent laws have been framed to deal with the perpetrators but many cases are not reported due to women enduring the pain. The women who raise their voice against the cruelty are either shunned out of their husband’s home or are stigmatized by the society.
Domestic violence cannot end without men changing their mindset towards the women folk. They have to realize that women enjoy equal status as men. In today’s world, women shoulder more responsibilities than men. Besides taking care of their homes and children they go out and earn. In no way they are inferior to men. It’s unfortunate that society has been unable to protect the fairer sex. There are many women organizations that have been creating awareness about the hardships being faced by women.
They make women aware about their rights and show the way to fight out the atrocities. More than external factors, the conditions within the four walls have to improve for the women folk. Their families have to accept that they are no tools and instruments. They have their own life and they have to be provided with the requisite space to breathe freely. The death of a woman in Baramulla town has once again brought to fore the difficulties that women face and on many occasions become victims of domestic violence. One can only feel sorry for the victim and hope that the perpetrators are punished.
