| ‘JKP flag flying at Nunkum was glorious’ | | ---IN CONVERSATION--- | | SUMIT SHARMA
Inspector General of Police, Armed, Sheikh Owais Ahmed had a promising career in academics but his first love was always Police. Success in State Services Examination in 1977 finally saw him donning the uniform and then there was no looking back. In an interview to Sumit Sharma of Early Times, Owais says the men of Armed Police conquering Everest was the most cherishing moment for him. Excerpts:
Please tell us your early life
I did my schooling from St Marry Convent, Baramulla, and then I took admission in Burn Hall school for higher education. I did my graduation from Amar Singh Sollege, Srinagar in BSC honor and got Zakir Hussain gold medal for all round best graduate student in 1973 and also bagged the National Merits scholarship. In 1975 I did MSC in Regional Development and Planning from Jawahar Lal Nehru University and became lecturer in the same college from where I did MSC. It was during that period that I qualified KAS exam with the first name in the list in 1977. It was since my school days that I had always wanted to join the Police force and this dream came true with allotment of service.
So, how the journey in Police
In my 31 years of service in Police force I served in different capacities and took many challenging assignments. I was first posted as Aid-de-Camp to Governor B.K Nehru in1980 then I posted as DySP Pulwama, SP City Srinagar. I remained four times commandant in Armed Police, five times district SP, SSP Pulwama, SSP Kathua and SSP Rajouri. In 2001 I was promoted and posted as DIG Doda then DIG Anantnag and now I am serving the force as IG Armed for the last three years.
Your major achievements
Well, to come up to the expectation to the department and to the people is the greatest achievement of a police man but as far as specific achievement is concerned I left no stone unturned to make the city policing efficient when I posted as SP City Srinagar. I also introduced flying squad and social and community policing in Srinagar. When I was SSP Pulwama I reined timber smuggling which was at its high and for this I was awarded with medal by the state government. When I was posted as DIG Anantnag militancy was on the peak, markets would be closed before 6PM but I left the district the scene was entirely different; people would move around freely till late in the evenings. Same was the case in Rajouri when I was posted as DIG Rajouri. The graph of militancy was about to tough 80% percent and we brought it down tremendously. For my dedication and sincerity to the tasks, I have been awarded with President’s gold medal and DGP gold medal.
You latest assignment is with Armed Police. How this wing works and what innovations you brought about
As IG Armed I lay emphases on the specialized trainings to the cops besides sports was given major thrust. Nunkun and Everest have been conquered by Armed Jawans under my constant supervision. Ram Singh and Sajjad Haider hoisted Country, State and JKP flags on the peak of Mount Everest which is mark of proud for the police and this is my gift to JKP. As far as works are concerned the main motto of the Armed is to assist the district police besides maintain law and order, escort duties, guard duties and protection to VIPs and Armed police is doing its duties efficiently.
Where do you place JKP among other Police forces in country?
No doubt Jammu and Kashmir Police is one of the efficient among all the police forces in the country but as far as impetus is concerned it is up to the new entrants because the quantity is much in the force but skills need to be enhanced. New entrants should lay emphases on quality.
Your message for the youth
Good manners and the feeling of patriotism is something vanishing among the new generations which is a cause of concern and we elders are very much responsible for this. I still remember that when I was about 14 years, on my request my father took me to cinema hall and during that time after the end of the film a national anthem was sung in the hall and when the national anthem was in progress I was sleeping on the chair and on this mistake my father did not speak to me for long. That was a punishment I still remember. Parents and teachers should inculcate moral values among the budding true child is one who by the dint of hard labor reach on the zenith and became the proud of parents, society and country. |
