Unchecked terror lands India among world’s 20 most dangerous countries

Jammu, Nov 30: With the death toll in Mumbai terror blaze pegged at 200, at least 7200 people have lost their lives in around 6000 incidents of terror across the country in past four years.
Repeated incidents of terror and a failing will to fight back have put India in the league of failed countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan where death and destruction is order of the day. After this latest incident of terror in Mumbai India in a list of 20 countries perceived most dangerous for visiting foreigners - India has been listed alongside places like Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Mexico, Thailand and South Africa in this list. Chechnya, Jamaica, Sudan, Colombia, Haiti, Eritrea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Burundi, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Lebanon have also been named among the 20 "most dangerous places to visit on Earth."
Listing India among the world's 20 most dangerous places after the Mumbai terror strike that claimed close to 200 lives, UK daily The Telegraph said in an online report noted that the British government was currently advising against all, but essential, travel to Mumbai. Writing on India, the report said, "Although the Foreign Office is currently advising against all but essential travel to Mumbai, most of the rest of the country is considered safe.
According to a report of Union Home Ministry while the first year of the UPA government saw 6,029 incidents that claimed 1,721 lives, the number of incidents fell as also the number of casualties from the next year onwards.
In 2005, there were 5,709 incidents in which 1,598 people died while in 2006 there were 5,240 attacks that left 1,352 people dead.
In the following year, 4,907 incidents occurred in which 1,215 people lost their lives. This year till September one, 3,157 incidents took place in which 760 people died. The figures for the current year exclude the Mumbai terror attacks in which nearly 200 people have died.
Major terror strikes during the UPA period includes the Hyderabad blasts that claimed over 40 lives, Samjhauta Express explosion in which 68 people died and Malegaon and serial train attacks in Mumbai that left over 230 dead, besides the latest Mumbai attacks.
During the NDA period, which saw 36,259 incidents and 11,714 deaths, the major attacks were on Parliament House, Akshardham temple and terror strikes at an army camp in Jammu besides storming of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly.
Major attacks were witnessed from May when 68 people were killed in the Jaipur bombings. In July, 57 people died after 20 synchronised bombs went off in Ahmedabad within a span of less than two hours.
In September, Delhi witnessed a series of blasts leaving 26 people dead.
The northeast too witnessed a spurt in violence towards the end of this year with nearly 80 casualties in over a dozen terror bombings across Assam in October.
In the same month, 17 people were killed in a powerful blast near Manipur police commando complex in Imphal.
Major incidents last year included Samjhauta Express blasts in February which claimed 66 lives and two explosions in Hyderabad in August in which 42 people died.
Malegaon in Maharashtra became synonymous with terror attacks as five persons died in a bomb blast in a crowded market in September.
The same town had hogged the headlines after 40 people were killed in two blasts in September 2006.
The biggest incident in 2006 was in Mumbai when over 200 people were killed in seven blasts in suburban trains and stations in July. The same year, 21 people were killed in the Varanasi blasts.
