Kapur calls for war against AIDS

JAMMU, DEC 1: Describing AIDS(Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome)as a catastrophic health problem having socio-economic and ethical dimensions, the Chief Secretary, Mr. S. S. Kapur called for all out efforts to eradicate this health problem.
The Chief Secretary was speaking after inaugurating a multi-sectoral AIDS advocacy seminar organized by Jammu and Kashmir AIDS Prevention and Control Society (JKAPCS) at Government Women’s College, Gandhi Nagar today, in connection with the celebration of World AIDS day.
“This challenge can be tackled by putting our heads together and devise ways and means for effective propagation of eradication and prevention of this disease. It is a multi-sectoral challenge and everybody should contribute its mite in this regard”, Mr. Kapur maintained.
Equating the spread of the disease with a forest fire, Mr. Kapur said that its spreads geometrically and the Sub-Saharan region of Botswana is an indicator in this regard were every third person is affected by AIDS. “Our state is lucky in this regard as we have already initiated effective measures and the prevalence rate is quite minimal”, he maintained. He further said communication should be focused on low prevalence and sustainability of the same.
Calling for coordinated and synergised efforts for systematic eradication, Mr. Kapur said for the same active support of all the stake holders is essential.
Complimenting the JKAPCS for evolving an effective strategy, Mr. Kapur said that the organization has developed state-wise, community-wise and group specific AIDS studies which has had a long term impact on checking spread of this life threatening disease. He said that in this regard, they have explored various media like folk theatre, jingles and regional languages which have been of immense help.
He further said that IEC (Information Education and Control) should also be effectively implemented.
Commissioner Secretary, Health and Medical Education Mr. Atul Dulloo also spoke on the occasion and ennumerated the measures taken for effective eradication of AIDS. He further complemented the JKAPCS for resorting to religious advocacy projects which have also been a help in spreading the message about the prevention of the disease. Among others who spoke on the occasion included Director Health Service, Jammu, Dr. Jasbir and project Director JKAPCS, Dr. M. A. Wani.
The Chief Secretary later distributed prizes among the winners of poster painting competition and also went around the exhibition of the exhibits of the society.
