| MNRE selects Ladakh for exploiting solar energy | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Leh, Dec 1: Expressing his gratitude to the Union Ministry of New Renewable Energy (MNRE) for choosing Ladakh as a model place for exploiting solar energy, Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Chering Dorje said that Ladakh has great potential to trap solar energy to meet the power requirement of the people mainly living in rural and remote areas. Addressing a meeting held to formulate an action plan for Renewable Energy Development in Ladakh organized by the Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency, Leh (LREDA) Dorje said exploiting solar energy in the region is of paramount importance to electrify the far off places, which are unable to connect through the proposed Power Grid of Leh. He said that regions like Nobra, Nyoma and Durbuk needs separate power grids and power plants to meet their requirement as these areas are unable to get electricity through Alchi Hydel Project due to difficult and long distanced factor. The CEC felt the need that authorization for carrying out execution of smaller power project up to 1MW should be given to LAHDC itself and said that this would not only ensure execution of the projects within timeframe but also help to have close monitoring and quality work. Dorje also urged for MNRE’s support in promotion of Green-houses in Ladakh in view of vast potential. The Executive Councilor, Health, Dorje Motup who addressed the meeting stressed the need for covering the people living along the India-China border through a special package of renewable power program. He said that providing basic facilities like power to these people would help check their distressful migration towards urbanization and help keep their heritage glory intact. The Executive Councilor, Agriculture, Norbu Lampa said that a new technology of commercial green house brought from Tibet is proving very productive in Ladakh and Hill Council is much intended to exploit this technology in the entire Ladakh in view of huge need of vegetables in the region particularly in the winter months. |
