| Congress playing politics on national issues: Chaman | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 1: Maintaining that Congress and its allies have failed on all fronts, the senior BJP leader and the party nominee from Jammu West Assembly Constituency, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has alleged that this party (Cong) played politics even on national issues like that of tackling the menace of terrorism. He pointed out that with an eye on its vote bank, the Congress led UPA abrogated even the anti-terror law viz the POTA and now after the Mumbai episode they are talking about the need for having a stringent law to deal with terrorism. Addressing a gathering on the eve of opening an election office at Paloura and also series of election meetings at Patoli, Pacca Talab, Kabir Basti and other places today, Prof. Gupta pointed out that it was due to soft policies of the Congress, the terrorism from Jammu Kashmir, spread to many other parts of the country creating alarming propositions. Now the Congress is feeling the need for a stringent law but the question arises that why POTA was abolished and why all the POTA cases numbering over 400 in Jammu and Kashmir were shelved and the persons involved in heinous crimes of massacres and killings of innocent persons were let off, he added and said that Congress was responsible for many ills including secessionism, fundamentalism and terrorism. The BJP leader pooh-poohed the claims of the Congress leaders about the development, progress and prosperity and particularly referred to the plight of the localities in the outskirts of Jammu City and regretted that there were little link roads, no proper draining system and worst conditions of the slum areas but the Congress leaders stand all the more guilty of having not spent a single penny of the Rs. 1470 crore PM package for Sewerage and augmenting drinking water. He said that no doubt huge sums were got from the Centre to eradicate poverty, illiteracy, backwardness, unemployment and solve other problems but the ground realities present a sad picture indicating that much of the funds were misused. |
