GDC Kathua Field organised trip to Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary

Jammu, May 21: Department of Botany of Government Degree College Kathua organised a field trip and interaction programme for students in collaboration with Department of Wildlife Protection, Kathua J&Kon the “Parthenium biocontrol and Biodiversity awareness programme” heretoday.
A total of 30 students of BSc. Semester 5th of botany department participated in the field trip.Principal GDC Kathua, Prof SumneshJasrotia flagged off the trip to Jasrota and encouraged the students to reap the maximum benefit from the field visit.
Dr. M.K. Kumar gave introductory note and welcomed students and staff members of botany department, GDC Kathua.
Then,Dr. R.K. gupta discussed the different methods to control of parthenium weed and how biocontrol is best suited for the same purpose.Dr. Neeraj Sharma Head of Institute of Mountain Environment gave a detailed presentation on the need of conservation of biodiversity and the role of biodiversity in sustaining the ecosystem services.
During the trip, the students visited the various locations and observed many wild species like wild boar, barking deer and a variety of avifauna inside the sanctuary.
An interaction/technical session with participants was also organized at Jasrota Training Centre wherein Dr Ravi Verma, Wildlife Warden Kathua discussed the various species of plants and animals present in the Sanctuary and the conservation efforts of Forest Department J&K in ecosystem restoration.
Prof. Ram Krishan, Head, department of botany coordinated the event, while Prof. Nisha Bhagat, Prof. Rupali Nanda,Dr.Shveta Saroop, Dr. Mir Afaq Ahmad, Dr.Sayir Aftab were part of the field trip.
Prof. Ram Krishan Informed the students that Partheniumplants is mainly a weed of waste and fallow land, hence, biological control by the Mexican beetle is the most economical and practical way to keep the weed under check.
Principal GDC Kathua Prof. Sumanesh Jasrotia was accompanied by the College Faculty Prof. Seema Malpotra, Prof. Raj Kiran, Prof. Jaswinder Singh, Prof. Rakesh Singh, Dr. Surya Partap Singh, Dr. J.S. Soodan, Prof. Kaurab Singh and other.
