| Terrorists want their own game alone | | | NIRBHAY JAMMUAL
Alas! Terrorists have terrorized cricket players. The recent mayhem in Mumbai sent shock waves among the community of sportsmen round the world. The first fallout of the Mumbai incident was the cancellation of two remaining one-day tie between India and England. Even before the Taj and the Oberoi hotels were flushed out of terrorists the England team announced to cut short the tour. The cricket players packed their baggage and flew back to England. No doubt even if the England team had decided to stay put in India and finish the two remaining fixtures it would not have changed the outcome of the series because India had already won the series 5-0,but it could have added to entertainment and excitement not only among the cricket lovers but to those millions of people who had remained glued to their TV sets watching the tie between the ball and the bat. Cancellation of the two remaining matches meant loss of revenue to the Board. One may not shed tears over the cancellation of the two matches. But heavy tears may be shed if the Indian cricket team cancels its tour of Pakistan, scheduled for January next year. India has announced its decision on cancellation of the tour of the Indian cricket players to Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed dismay over the decision of India. The Board Chief, Ijaz Butt has stated that if the Indian players visit Pakistan for playing the series it would be a sort of message to the terrorists that they would not be able to achieve their targets. If Butt's statement is read between the lines it becomes evident that the terrorists, plan of killing innocent people is, aimed at wrecking sports activities. Terrorism has wrecked economy in the countries where they operate, they have destabilized peace and upset the lives of millions of people. Now they have started targeting sports. It is only because of the activities of terrorists all over the world that during Olymics, or Commonwealth, or the Asian games the host countries have to make elaborate security arrangements for the visitors and the sportsmen and women. Even the participating countries carry their squad of sportsmen and women under heavy security cover. Does it mean that terrorists are opposed to any sports activity? Does it mean that terrorists believe in only the sport of killing ?It does seem so because they want the youth to play with guns and not with bats and hockey sticks. This reminds me of a story pertaining to frogs and boys. The boys standing over a pond would stone the frogs just for fun.The frogs told the boys "what is play for you is death for us."But the boys did not listen. So do not expect terrorists to be better than the boys by the side of the pond. The Mumbai carnage has now cast a shadow on the proposed test match series between India and England. Reg Dickason, security adviser of the England team, will be visiting India shortly for assessing the security situation. And if by then the terrorists did not carry out another strike the test series may not be wrecked. If they do and the test series is cancelled one will have no hesitation in blaming the terrorists for forcing the youth to wage jehad .It would indicate that terrorists love only the gun shooting sports and no other games. For the terrorists gun shooting is the only entertainment they want people to indulge in. Well people, by and large, all over the world are peace lovers. Those foreigners, who were gunned down by the terrorists in Taj and Oberoi had come to India for rest and relaxation. Those who were saved and cut short their tour had also come to India in search of peace and entertainment. If terrorists continue to play their game of wrecking all sports in the world it could hasten the return of the stone age. |
