| Differences surface in employees’ associations, strike unlikely today | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 1: Before upping their pressure on the government on demands of pay hike and increase in retirement age, differences have surfaced between two key associations of employees and tomorrow’s strike is unlikely to be effective. Sources said that on persuasion of the Governor’s administration the Secretariat Non Gazetted Employees Union has dropped its plans of pen down strike for tomorrow while Joint Action Committee of employees is adamant on going ahead with strike. The JAC includes members mostly from outside the secretariat but it is the Non Gazetted Employees Union which makes strike effective for being within the secretariat –the highest power center of the government. The Secretariat Non Gazetted Employees Union has said that they would prefer to wait till December 31 –the deadline government has sought for settling the pay issue. However, JAC is of the contention that this deadline is a mere delay tactic and therefore employees should observe strike for press for their demands. The employees, it may be mentioned here, have been demanding implementation of the recommendations of Sixth Pay Commission and hike in retirement age from existing 58 to 60 years. Earlier in the day a delegation representing the various associations of the State Government employees called on Governor N N Vohra at Raj Bhavan this morning and presented their views on varied issues relating to their welfare. Chief Secretary, SS Kapur, Financial Commissioner, Planning and Development, SL Bhat, (Chairman of the Pay Committee), Commissioner-Secretary Finance, BB Vyas and Commissioner-Secretary, General Administration Department, Basharat Ahmed Dhar, were present during the discussions. Appreciating the concerns of the employees, the Governor informed them that the Chairperson of the Pay Committee, recently established by the State Government to examine various issues relating the revision of pay scales, shall be asked to complete its task by end December 2008 and, further, all necessary procedural requirements shall also be completed within this period. He observed that a similar direction would also be given to the Chairperson of the Committee set up to review issues relating to the employees of the State Public Sector Undertakings. The Governor noted that both these Committees would also particularly address the existing anomalies while finalizing their recommendations. Appreciating the work of the employees in regard to the efficient conduct of the ongoing electoral process in the State, the Governor exhorted the representatives of the Employees Associations to meaningfully support the work of the two Committees so that they can accomplish their assigned tasks with the envisaged time-frame. He also advised them to maintain complete discipline and decorum in their work and conduct, at all times. |
