Chairperson launches awareness drive on E-waste management

JAMMU, May 30: Chairperson, J&K Pollution Control Committee, Dr. Neelu Gera, on Monday inaugurated doorstep awareness drive for consumers and bulk Consumers regarding E-waste management.
She congratulated JKPCC, Jammu for taking this initiative, being the first of its kind awareness campaign that will focus on carrying the awareness at the door step to ensure compliance of responsibilities of consumers and bulk consumers laid under E-waste (Management) Rules, 2016.
The drive was inaugurated by the Chairperson through virtual mode which was attended by Nodal Officers from GGM Science College, Jammu, GCW, Gandhi Nagar college, GDC, Reasi, GDC, Samba and GDC for Women Kathua, Disha Organization and Live for Others-being helpful foundation.
K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary, JKPCC informed that this was the first phase of such a drive beginning with five Degree colleges and the awareness shall be a continuous process by involving more degree colleges in future.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson virtually presided over a commendation ceremony organised to felicitate the volunteers of Jammu University (Department of Environmental Sciences & Sociology), GGM Science College, MAM College, GCW Parade & Commerce College and other agencies for their active participation during " save Tawi Campaign" and volunteers of GGM Science College, Disha organization, Live for others, Inara Welfare Foundation, Organization for Youth & Development, Regional and Urban Development Agency, WMARS and Indian Pollution control Association for their active participation during" Plastic Free J&K" campaign organized by Forest Department in association with JKPCC and other allied departments.
The "Save Tawi Campaign" was conducted from April 8 to April 10 2022, with focus on creating awareness among common masses regarding the importance of River Tawi for survival of future generations and the need to save it by ensuring that no plastic material gets immersed in water during religious occasions.
Similarly, the "Plastic Free J&K" campaign was organized as an initiative of J&K Government through Forest Department on the eve of World Earth Day on April 21, 2022, covering 16 forest and tourist locations in J&K, where cleanliness drive was conducted and around 1.2 Tons plastic waste was channelized for processing through IPCA.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary, J&K Pollution Control Committee, Sat Paul, Regional Director JKPCC, Jammu, Divisional Officers, JKPCC, Jammu (North & South), Anuradha, Scientist, JKPCC, Jammu and Nodal Officers representing various colleges and representatives from Producer Responsibility Organizations and NGOs. Regional Director JKPCC Jammu, Sat Paul gave a brief introduction on the work done by JKPCC in association with NSS volunteers from various colleges, Producer Responsibility Organizations and NGOs during "Save Tawi Campaign" and " Plastic Free J&K" campaign launched to create mass awareness for cleaner and green J&K. Sh. K. Ramesh Kumar, Member Secretary, JKPCC in his keynote address lauded the efforts of all participating Institutions and agencies. He further emphasized the role of citizens in ensuring replacement of Single Use Plastic by available eco-friendly alternatives.
Dr. Neelu Gera, Chairperson, JKPCC in his concluding address appreciated the initiatives taken by JKPCC to organize such awareness drives by involving development societies, NGOs, students, PROs and implementing authorities. He encouraged students for their active participation during these awareness drives and expressed gratitude towards all volunteers for their selfless efforts.
Other officers present in the event were Principal Scientific Officer, JKPCC Smt. Neelu Sharma, Divisional Officer, Jammu North Sh. Anil Sharma, Divisional officer, Jammu South, Sh. Arshad Malik, and Scientist, JKPCC Smt. Anuradha.
