| Pope’s remarks provoke outcry | | Geelnai, Shah under house arrest, Masrat taken into custody | | Srinagar/Jammu, Sep 15 The statement of Pope Benedict XVI has provoked outcry among the general masses in Jammu and Kashmir, where hundreds of people came on the road to protest against the `anti-Islam’ remarks. Reports revealed that while police put two separatist leaders Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani, and Shabir Ahmed Shah under house arrest, people staged protest demonstration in the down town Srinagar. A protest demonstration was also staged by Bar Association Kashmir, which passed through Lal Chowk area. It was learnt that soon after Friday prayers people gathered in large number outside a local mosque in downtown Srinagar and staged a protest demonstration against the Pope’s remarks. Shouting pro-freedom slogan the protestors were demanding apology from the Pope over the “anti-Islamic” remarks. “The statement of Pope Benedict has hurt the religious sentiments of Muslim world”, said Abdul Gafoor, one of the protestors. He alleged that the West was hell bent to create confusion about fastest growing religion in the world. A group of lawyers, led by Kashmir Bar Association President Abdul Qayoom, also staged a protest demonstration at Lal Chowk. Shouting pro-Islamic slogans the protestors even blocked the vehicular traffic for more than an hour. However, police kept restrained and the protestors later on dispersed peacefully. Meanwhile, sources told News Agency of Kashmir that police cordoned off the private residence of senior separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Shabir Ahmed Shah and asked them to remain inside their house, till late this evening. The leaders, sources said, were house arrested keeping in view the tension in the city. Police also took Masrat Alam, Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League, under preventive custody when he was going scheduled to lead a protest demonstration. Reports pouring in from various areas of Jammu division also revealed that numbers of demonstrations were staged in protest against the remarks. A large number of girls students from a local Madrassa staged a protest demonstration in Jammu. |
