| Partial strike hits patient care, Govt hints at ‘proper’ action | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 2: Patient care was today severely affected in the Government Medical College here and other medical health institutions across the state due to strike of an association of employees. The Government, meanwhile, has indicated to initiate disciplinary action against the employees to went on strike today despite an understanding that employees will wait for the report of State Pay Committee which was constituted to look into the pay revision issue. Following split among the leaders of the employees association over December 2 strike call patient care services were paralyzed in Government medical college hospital and other health institutions across the state on Tuesday. Barring emergency care services, all other departments including OPD’s remained shut and hapless patients, who arrived here in search of medical treatment, had to go home without receiving any treatment. The representatives of the government employees’ joint action committee during yesterday’s meeting with the Governor had withdrawn strike call without taking all other constituents into confidence. The one sided decision unnerved several employees and they lost no time in accusing their own leaders of hobnobbing with the Governor’s administration. It may be mentioned that the Governor in his meeting with the representatives had assured them early solution to their problems and fulfilment of their demands but in the absence of any concrete evidence and proposal, the employees were in no mood to call off their agitation. The agitating employees also staged a dharna outside the OPD block of the GMC and shouted anti government slogans. The employees said that the Governor has assured that he would expedite their case and recommendations of the six pay commission would soon be implemented. The employees leaders argue after the completion of the election process when the new government will come to office the assurance given by the Governor would hold no significance. The employees said that our own leaders like Ram Kumar and Ghafoor Dar are speaking on behalf of the state government for their own vested interests. Meanwhile, the government has taken a serious note of a few employees of the Health and Medical Education Department not attending to their duties and attempting protest demonstration in Jammu today. An official spokesman said here today that in pursuance to a meeting on December 1, 2008 between the representatives of the employees and the Government, the modalities for early completion of the task by the Pay Panel were discussed. He said the employees thereafter called off the strike announced by them for December 2, 2008. The spokesman said that the Government offices functioned normally throughout the State today. However, he said it was brought to the notice of the Government that a few employees of the Health and Medical Education department did not attend to their duties and attempted protest demonstrations in Jammu. He said a serious note has been taken of this act of indiscipline and disciplinary action was being contemplated against such employees. |
