JAMMU, June 2: World Environment Day-2022 themed "Only One Earth" was celebrated with great enthusiasm by the Department of Environmental Sciences on 1st and 2nd June 2022 under the patronage of Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor.
On 1st June, 2022 a National workshop on "Air Pollution and Health Impacts" (Need of interdisciplinary Research) was presided over by Hon'ble Vice Chancellor. The keynote speaker Prof. S.N. Tripathi (National Coordinator, NKN, NCAP) from IIT Kanpur delivered a very insightful and informative lecture on Capacity Building and Technology Development by Universities in India's Clean Air Program. The sessions (I: Air Pollution and its Impact on Human health: An Indian Perspective and II: Aerosol Oxidative Potential: Relating Air Pollution and Human Health) were led by the eminent atmospheric scientists Prof. Sagnik Dey, Center for Atmospheric Science, IIT Delhi and Prof. Neeraj Rastogi, Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad respectively. Prof. Sunil Dhar (Head) welcomed the dignitaries and Dr. Richa Kothari (Coordinator) presented formal vote of thanks. Co-coordinators Dr. Anita Singh and Dr. Dinesh Kumar played pivotal role in organizing the event. This interactive workshop was webcasted (live) on YouTube and attracted attendees from all over India. In his presidential remark, Honorable Vice Chancellor extended full support to workshop theme and called for meaningful contribution through interdisciplinary research for betterment of air quality and human health of people of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Shweta Yadav (Convener) thanked all for making the workshop a great success. On 2nd June 2022, the event was presided over by Prof. Dhar and convened by Dr. Kothari with Dr. Singh, Dr. Yadav and Dr. Kumar. This student-centric event was designed to spread awareness and interact with the housekeeping staff in layman's language. The team of research scholars and students performed various outreach activities: installation of earthen water pots for birds, poetry, poster making, skit on "Jal hi Jeevan Hai", self-designed documentaries to beat plastic pollution and with focus on threats to biodiversity. To spread the eco-friendly message of minimum usage of single use plastics, cotton bags were distributed. Rajni (housekeeping staff) thanked the department for organizing this event.
