| Double title for Tamil Nadu in Sub-junior Volleyball | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 3: Proving that they are the best stuff in the country, formidable Tamil Nadu boys retained the championship trophy while unseeded girls from South improved their position to make Tamil Nadu the new champion in the 31st Sub-junior National Volleyball Championships held at MA Stadium, here today. In the boys final, Tamil Nadu outplayed the same opponent, they had defeated last year, Uttar Pradesh in straight by close sets 25-20, 25-2, 25-21. Third place went to Kerela, who routed Karnataka in the hardliner. High spirited Tamil Nadu girls downed the defending champion, West Bengal 25-22 25-18 25-18 to become new sub-junior national champion. In the hardliner, unseeded Uttar Pradesh defeated last year’s runners-up Karnataka 3-1 (18-25 25-22 25-23 25-15). Director General of Police (DGP), J&K Police, Kuldeep Khoda was the chief guest in the boys final and valedictory function. He gave away winners and runners-up trophies besides distributed other prizes distributed. Speaking on the occasion, DGP complimented Tamil Nadu for winning both boys and girls titles and advised other participating teams to keep on trying for their best show next time, aiming at the double title. Working president of the championships and president of Volleyball Association of J&K, Raj Daluja in his welcome address briefed the distinguished gathering about the week-long championships. He thanked the participating teams, especially the Volleyball Federation of India for extending the assistance for smooth conduct of the mega event in the City of Temples. As many as 49 teams including 26 boys and 23 in girls section took part in the championships. Prominent among those present in the concluding function were Inspectors General of Police, Raja Ajaz Ali and Dilbagh Singh, president JKOA, Rangil Singh, Principal Controller of Accounts, Northern Command, Gautam Sen, former Secretary, State sports Council, Sheikh Fazal Ahmed, Sidharth Sharma, Kiran Wattal, Vijay Sharma, MJ Sharma and Ashutosh Sharma (secretary JKOA).
