Govt PG College Rajouri celebrates world oceans day

Rajouri, June 8: The Department of Botany of Govt PG College Rajouri celebrated World Oceans Day here today.
On this occasion an extension lecture on the topic “Our Oceans, Our Responsibilities” in which Dr. Ashaq Malik, Director, Research and Development Cell of the College was the resource person. Prof. (Dr.) Javaid Ahmed Qazi, Principal was Chief Guest and Prof. Mohd Farooq Mirza, Vice Principal of the College, guest of honour on this occasion whereas Dr. Anwer Shah, HoD Botany in College was convener of the programme.
While speaking on the occasion Prof. Javaid Qazi underlined the need of reducing ocean pollution by acting more responsibly on land, and opting eco-friendly behaviors. Students and youth are the real ambassadors to take the message to society for conserving our natural resources, especially oceans, he added.
Dr. Ashaq Malik, Director, Research and Development Cell of College spoke at length on causes, impact and solutions to overcome marine pollution. He said that oceans are lungs of planet earth that play a great role in regulating global climate, absorbing carbon and heat, and producing oxygen besides sustaining the livelihood of over 3 billion people, providing trade, transportation opportunities and medicine.
Earlier, Dr. Anwer Shah welcomed the audience and introduced them about the relevance of celebrating this event in this far distant area from the ocean. He stressed upon the need of implementing the ideals of reduce, reuse and recycle, and saying “No to Plastic Use” that not only is harmful for the terrestrial health but also the marine biodiversity. Prof. Ghulam Abas presented a formal vote of thanks. Prof. Manzoor Dar, Prof. Asia Bhat, non-teaching staff of Department of Botany including Mohd Bashir, Mushtaq ahmed, Mohd farooq and Mohd Yaqub along with a large number of students of 6th semester participated in the programme. All the participants present in the programme took pledge to NT3 (No trash, No trail and No Trace).
