| Battle gets out of ordinary in Jammu | | Bhim perturbs Khajuria, Ashok hits Mangat, Balwan rebels in March | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 3: Poll battle is getting quite interesting in Jammu City and outskirt constituencies of the district as new political equations have emerged with unexpected contenders joining the fray. In an apparent bid to upset the apple cart of BJP state president Ashok Khajuria, the Panthers Party leader Prof Bhim Singh has plunged into fray in Jammu East constituency taking all by surprise. Ashok Khajuria is apparently perturbed with Bhim’s presence as his chauvinistic so called pro-Jammu approach has a better answer in the measured and logical regional discourse of Panthers Party chairman. In Jammu West, the Congress rebel Ashok Sharma who has recently contested from Kalakote constituency as independent candidate has filed his nomination papers. In this constituency, Ashok Sharma’s sole aim also appears to be upsetting the prospects of Congress. His attempts of destabilizing position of BJP veteran Chaman Lal Gupta is also not ruled out. In neighbouring Marh constituency, former MLA and Congress heavy weight Balwan Singh has jumped fray as independent candidate. He was expecting ticket from there but party decided in favour of Dharam Paul Sharma. A Panthers Party spokesman said that Bhim Singh who had no plan to contest Assembly polls in the present electoral battle has suddenly filed his nomination papers from Jammu East, a prestigious seat of Dogra culture, history, civilization and art. He said that Bhim Singh has responded to an urgent call of the Jammu Voters Club hailing from different walks of life urging him to contest from Jammu East. Hundreds of youth appeared on the roads irrespective of their party affiliations to welcome the Panthers Party Chief popularly known as Sher-e-Jammu. Arun Sawhney, who was nominated by the party to contest election from Jammu East, surprisingly appealed Prof. Singh to contest election as, “the people of Jammu need a fearless, daring, intellectual leader like Bhim Singh after Maharaja Hari Singh and Pt. Prem Nath Dogra to save the culture, art and history of the great Dogras”, said the Panthers Party. After disturbing apple cart of Congress candidate in Kalakote assembly seat, dissident Congress leader and famous environmentalist, Ashok Sharma filed his nomination papers from Jammu west constituency this time challenging veteran Congress leader and former deputy chief Minister Pt Mangat Ram Sharma. Sharma contested elections from Kalakote assembly segment against official congress candidate AG Kohli and National conference candidate Rachpal Singh. Sharma decided to jump the fray as independent after congress party fielded former chief engineer and Gujjar leader AG Kohli. Several congress men and close friends of Ashok Sharma were surprised when they came to know about Sharma’s nomination from Jammu west Assembly constituency. Meanwhile, Sharma is believed to have joined the fray to establish his credentials as popular leader and hence decided to contest from two assembly segments simultaneously. His presence in the fray would disturb the arithmetic of Congress leader Mangat Ram Sharma as he would campaign against the congress and attract likeminded voters in his camp. |
