EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 4: Educational qualification of candidates contesting election is not a tool to influence them. Had it been so Qazi Mohammed Afzal, who has passed eighth standard, would have not defeated National Conference Chief, Omar Abdullah, who holds a B.Com degree, from Ganderbal constituency in 2002.The two are pitted against each other again in the current election. Again Rachpal Singh, who has studied up to 10+2, defeated the Congress candidate, Ashok Kumar Sharma, a law graduate, in 2002 election. Rachpal is again the National Conference candidate from Kalakote constituency in Rajouri district.
In his affidavit, while filing his nomination papers Nawang Rigzin Jora, a former Minister, has written that he is literate and can read and write. It created some misgivings among people but later it was revealed that Jora is a graduate from St. Stephen's college, New Delhi. In the previous election he was elected unopposed from Leh constituency and this time he has in Thupstan Chhewag, a law graduate, the main rival. Mohammed Khalil Band and Mohammed Khalil Naik, only matriculates, had defeated better qualified opponents in 2002 from Pulwama and Wachi constituencies respectively.
