Don’t turn minors into drivers
6/13/2022 11:20:48 PM

With the increase in number of two and four wheelers the number of underage drivers is also rising rampantly in the country, including Jammu and Kashmir.
Last year a local court in Srinagar had sent a father to jail for the accident caused by his minor son. The young boys and girls driving two wheelers and cars is not a good sign. Such practice needs to be discouraged.
According to government data, 1.2 lakh deaths were reported due to negligence related to road accidents in 2020, with 328 people losing their lives every day on an average.
Nearly 3.92 lakh lives were lost due to negligent driving or bypassing traffic rules in the last 3 years according to the NCRB’s annual ‘Crime India’ report of 2020. These numbers are alarming and it’s high time that people take traffic laws very seriously.
Parents need to understand that they cannot put their children on the wheels at an early age as the youngsters usually are careless and speed thrills them. More than anyone it’s the parents who have to understand that it’s risky to give vehicles to juveniles at an early age.
There cannot be a traffic policeman at every nook and corner so one cannot just rely on the law enforcing agencies to ensure that no underage drivers drive the vehicles without having a valid driving license.
Everyday we see adolescent children and boys more often, indulging in bike racing and rash driving to impress peers.
They feel a sense of freedom by violating the law and it is that feeling that prompts an underage driver to not wear helmets and seat belts.
Most of them don’t follow traffic rules, a self destructive factor which also poses danger to other road users.
The need of the hour is to create awareness not only among the children but also among their parents.
The vehicles driven by minors should be seized and the parents need to be penalized for handing over the keys of their vehicles to juveniles.
The charity has to begin from home i.e. parents have to ensure that kids don’t hit the roads without a valid driving license and without attaining the age that’s required to be a driver. System has to change and stringent laws need to be put in place to make roads and driving safe.
