Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 17: Department of Environmental Sciences and Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU), University of Jammu under the aegis of Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education (MGNCRE), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India organized one-day 'Edu-trip' to 'Traditional Mata Vaishno Devi Route, Bamyal' and 'Sitlee Water Treatment Plant, Nagrota' to mark World Environment week 2022 and to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
The purpose of the trip was to acquaint the students with our natural heritage and show them the traditional water conservation structures present along the route. Professor Piyush Malaviya, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences in his inaugural remarks, said that the main purpose of organizing such visits is to impart practical knowledge to the students, and such demonstrations in the real-time environment add to their knowledge base.
The students were shown the old water filtration Unit near Pangoli Temple which consists of a stepwell along with partitions for storage and sedimentation of water. The filtered water finally entered the well located in the temple vicinity which was used for drinking by the pilgrims during the ancient times. Dr. Deepika Slathia, the Teacher In charge of the event talked about the importance of the traditional water bodies and the need for their conservation.
The students also interacted with the locals to sensitize them regarding the importance of clean water and highlighted the possible health hazards caused due to drinking polluted water. The students also visited the Sitlee Water Treatment Plant, Nagrota where they were shown the present-day water treatment system. Mr. Ankush from the PHE Department, Sitlee demonstrated the functioning of the treatment plant and the different processes involved in water treatment like sedimentation, the addition of alum, Chlor-flocculation, filtration, and chlorination of water.
The students were also apprised with the usage statistics like the amount of water lifted from the Tawi lifting station per day, the total capacity of the treatment plant, the amount of water supplied daily, and the amount of water stored in storage tanks. Students interacted with the PHE officials and raised certain queries which were well addressed by the Officials. Dr. Meenakshi Kahjuria from the department also talked about her research findings on the water quality status of water from the Tawi treatment plant and the water distribution system of the Jammu city
