Military Action in PoK will Provoke War with Pak: CPI(M)
12/5/2008 11:56:15 AM
ET DESK
Jammu Delhi, DEC 4: Attacking BJP and a section of the media for advocating a US-type response to the Mumbai terror attacks, the CPI(M) today said such a move would only result in what terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) want.
Observing that after the attack on the Twin Towers, the Bush Administration had waged a war against Iraq which had "nothing whatsoever" to do with the terror strike, the party said military strikes against targets in Pak-occupied Kashmir "will surely provoke a war" with Pakistan.
"The result would be exactly what the extremist outfits like LeT want," CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury said.
In an editorial in the latest issue of 'People's Democracy', he said what was required was not a war with Pakistan "but to ensure that strong action is taken against terrorist organisations and personnel in that country".
Noting that the issue was to get the Pakistani government act against extremist groups, Yechury said all evidence collected should be presented to that goernment which should be asked to act promptly.
"If they do not respond, then India should take the matter to the UN Security Council under its Resolution 1373 which asks all states to take steps to prevent commission of terror acts, deny safe havens to those who finance, plan or support these activities," Yechury said.
The Security Council, he said, should be urged to ask Pakistan to take necessary measures to apprehend the culprits responsible and suppress their organisations.
While the UPA government was "legitimately in the dock for its continuing failure" to tackle the terror threat, the BJP has fallen back on its usual game of using the attacks to "deepen the communal divide hoping for an electoral dividend," the CPI(M) leader said.
Quoting BJP leader Arun Jaitley for stating that India's response to Mumbai attacks should be "substantially closer to what the US did after 9/11", he said the "corporate media" also "shamelessly advocate the Bush doctrine and justify this by stating that the US has not been subject to any terrorist attack since 9/11".
Yechury said till the Mumbai attacks took place, "the BJP-RSS combine was busy in attacking Maharashtra's Anti- Terrorism Squad for its arrest of extremist Hindutva elements" and had vilified ATS chief Hemant Karkare who was killed in the terrorist shootout.
"Communalism and religious extremism feed terrorist violence," said.
He also attacked the "corporate media, particularly the television news channels, (for having begun) a mindless anti-politician campaign which only covers up the systemic problems and promotes an anti-democratic, authoritarian atmosphere".
Referring to the government proposal to set up a Federal Investigation Agency, he said it had "so far not found favour with the states who legitimately fear that they will be kept out of sensitive security investigations".
In this context, he asked whether one could tackle the ULFA violence without the cooperation of police and security agencies in Assam.
"There has to be a coordinated mechanism to deal with terrorism but coordination needs to bring in the states," Yechury said, adding that police reforms and modernisation as also the coastal security system needed to be strengthened considerably.
