Unprecedented rush of ‘losers’ for fifth phase
179 in fray for 11 segments, Shopian, Tral have 21 each; 5 women, 58 independent also try luck

Jammu, Dec 4: Surpassing records of first four phases of elections (fourth phase is yet to go to polls) the fifth phase of ongoing assembly elections has a highest average number of candidates per constituency –at least three times higher than the average size of 2002 elections.
As many as 179 candidates are in fray for 11 assembly constituencies going to polls in fifth phase on December 13. This comes out to around 16 candidates per constituency while the average number of candidates contesting elections in first four phases has been 12 candidates per constituency. In 2002 elections, the average number of candidates contesting elections per constituency was a little over 5.
Interestingly, it is an unprecedented rush of losers in the fifth phase as eventually only 11 of the 179 candidates will make way to the Legislative Assembly.
There are also 58 independent candidates and five woman contestant in fray for the fifth phase which includes districts of Kathua in Jammu and Pulwama and Shopian in Kashmir.
Among these constituencies, Shopian and Tral have the distinction of having the highest number of 21 contestants each in the electoral fray. As many as five women contestants and 58 independents are also in the ring in this phase of elections.
In the fifth phase, 73 candidates will contest from Pulwama district which include 21 from Tral, 15 from Pampore, 19 from Pulwama and 18 from Rajpora Assembly constituencies. The total electors in the Pulwama district are 2,93,127.
Those contesting elections from Tral constituency are Bashir Ahmad Sadiq of ANC, Javaid Ahmad Lone of PDF(S), Jawehir Lal Pandith of BJP, Surender Singh of INC, Shabir Ahmad Shah of BSP, Abdul Rashid Sheikh of J&K Democratic Party (Nationalist), Abdul Ganie Lone of SP, Farooq Ahmad Mohand of National Democratic Party, Krishan Singh of NPP, Mohammad Ashraf Bhat of NC, Mohammad Ayoub Band of Lok Jan Shakti Party, Mohammad Shafi Bhat of All India Forward Bloc, Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of PDP and Bashir Ahmad Jan, Surjeet Singh, Gulam Hassan Reshi, Ghulam Mohammad Mir, Ghulam Mohi-u-din Shah, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Khaim Singh and Nazir Ahmad Badna, all independents.
The contestants from Pampore constituency are Bashir Ahmad Wani of J&K National United Front, Zahoor Ahmad of PDP, Abdul Rouf Renzoo of PDF(S), Ghulam Nabi Mir of NC, Fayaz Ahmad Magray of BSP, Gowhar Ahmad Reshi of J&K National Panthers Party, Mohammad Anwar Bhat of INC, Mohammad Ramzan Dar of ANC, Mohammad Yousuf Dar of Lok Jan Shakti Party and Assad Ullah Mir, Abdul Ahad Yatoo, Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Mohammad Altaf Dar and Mohammad Hussain Bhat, all independents.
The names of the candidates contesting from Pulwama constituency are Imtiyaz Ahmad Mir of Samta Party, Javid Abdullah Mir of J&K Democratic Party (Nationalist), Riyaz Ahmad Mir of BSP, Syed Masood Ahmad of JKNPP, Suhail Ahmad Mir of National Lok Hind Party, Abdul Qayoom Mir of PDF(S), Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Lok Jan Shakti Party, Ghulam Mohammad Reshi of JD(S), Ghulam Nabi Wani of NC, Gulzar Ahmad Nengroo of RJD, Mohamad Ayoub Thoker of ANC, Mohamad Khalil Band of PDP and Bashir Ahmad Nengroo, Sona Ullah Dar, Sanjay Koul, Abdul Gani Shah, Abdul Rehman Thoker, Mohammad Ibrahim Dar and Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, all independents.

In Shopian district, 40 contestants are in fray, which include 19 from Wachi and 21 from Shopian constituency. The total electors in the district are 1,39,495.
The contestants from Wachi constituency are Autar Krishan Pandita of BJP, Aisha Nishat of ANC, Bashir Ahmad of Raja Naojawan Shakti Party, Dwarkanath Raina of Republic Party of India(A), Sayeed Ahmad Wani of Democratic Party (Nationalist), Showket Hussain Ganai of NC, Abdul Rashid Dar of National Democratic Conference, Abdul Qayoom Shah of Socialist Democratic Party, Ghulam Hassan Mir of All India Forward Block, Ghulam Hassan Wani of SP, Mehbooba Mufti of PDP, Mohammad Amin Ganai of National Lok Hind Party, Mohammad Ayub Bhat of BSP, Mohammad Khalil Naik of CPI(M), Mohammad Mustafa Malik of RJD, Manzoor Ahmad Naik of JKNPP, Nazir Ahmad Shah of INC, National Democratic Conference and Kulbushan Kaw and Muzaffar Ahmad Wagay, both independents.

In Jammu Division’s Kathua district, 66 contestants are in fray, out of which 11 are in Bani, nine in Basohli, 20 in Kathua, 15 in Billawar and 11 in Hiranagar Assembly constituencies. The total electors in Kathua district are 4,06,331.
The contestants in fray from Bani constituency are Prem Sagar of INC, Tara Chand of BSP, Deep Kumar of Lok Jan Shakti Party, Rakesh Singh of JKNPP, Ali Mohammad Lone of SP, Ghulam Hyder Malik of NC, Lal Chand of BJP, Noor Mohammad Afzal of PDP and Raj Kumar, Anayat Pervaz and Karandev Singh, all independents.
From Basohli constituency, the contestants in fray are Jagdish Raj Sapolia of BJP, Davinder Singh of NC, Romesh Chander of BSP, Romesh Kumar of JD(U), Kanta Andotra of INC, Karpal Singh of PDP, Vinod Kumar of Lok Jan Shakti Party and Angrazo Ram and Suraj Singh, both independents.
Those contesting elections from Kathua constituency are Bodh Raj of Republican Party of India, Rakesh Kumar of Lok Jan Shakti Party, Ravinder Singh Pathania of JKNPP, Ravinder Singh Salathia of NC, Sen Dass of BJP, Surrinder Singh of PDP, Som Raj of BSP, Kulbushan Kumar of National Bahujan Party, Lal Singh of INC, Mohammad Gulzar of J&K Democratic Party Nationalist, Mohinder Singh of CPI(M), Vikas Sharma of ANC and Jatinder Singh alias Babu Singh, Charanjit Singh, Sagar Chand, Sushil Kumar, Kamaljeet Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Naresh Kumar and Vishal Salgotra, all independents.
