Covid Not Over Yet | | | The spike in COVID-19 cases has once again sent the alarm bells ringing in Jammu and Kashmir. Doctors in Kashmir have already sounded a warning asking people to mask up and be cautious. World Health Organization (WHO) has already stated that COVID-19 is far from over and there is every possibility about the fourth wave hitting the world. Addressing the 75th World Health Assembly, the WHO chief had said the Covid-19 pandemic had demonstrated why the world needed the WHO. He once again asserted that a stronger and sustainably financed WHO is needed at the center of the global health security architecture. After the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020, the WHO was criticized for not alerting the world in advance. Even the then President Trump led US government had stopped providing financial aid to the WHO and had accused it of being hand in glove with China. Many countries were of the opinion that COVID-19 spread from a laboratory in China and Chinese had made a deliberate attempt to target the world by spreading the virus. The world took two years to fight COVID-19 pandemic. Many precious lives were lost till a complete mechanism was put in place to fight the pandemic. The Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has said they have not forecasted the fourth wave of COVID-19 in India yet but nevertheless an independent study has predicted that fourth wave can hit anytime. The study has stated that ruling out the possibility of the 4th wave could be an inaccurate assumption. The emergence of new COVID-19 variants is a cause of concern. The network of Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) of laboratories is undertaking whole genome sequencing of samples for timely detection of mutant variants of virus to prevent the Covid-19 from wreaking havoc. The Union Health Ministry is regularly holding review with all relevant stakeholders including subject experts and states to review preparedness and response measures to address COVID-19 pandemic following the five-fold strategy of test-tack-treat-vaccinate and adherence to COVID appropriate behaviour. The J&K Government must keep track of the situation closely and continue to keep a close watch. As on date more than 95% population in J&K has been vaccinated and the authorities are sure about handling any situation that can emerge. But still there is no chance for complacency and people need to take precautions. |
