Pak playing dirty games in J&K
7/3/2022 11:13:32 PM

Recently, Inspector General of Police, Punjab, stated that J&K has emerged as a new origin of smuggling narcotics to different parts of the country.
The investigations into the 16kg heroin recovery from Gurdaspur had revealed that arrested accused persons had used National Highway (connecting Jammu to Punjab) to bring this consignment from Jammu by concealing it in specially designed compartments in two Toyota Innova Crysta cars. This was the third such case of drug smuggling from Jammu side to Punjab that came to fore in less than one year wherein smugglers used the same modus operandi.
The incidents of drugs smuggling in Jammu and Kashmir regions have increased manifolds as Pakistan has been pumping drugs into the Union Territory through different routes.
In September this year the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a charge sheet filed by it in a narco-terrorism case had revealed how operatives of terror outfits such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) were behind the Jammu and Kashmir drug trade.
The NIA charge sheet had claimed that the Lashkar was reportedly funding the Hizbul group in Kashmir with a hope to revive terrorism in J&K. It had also stated how drug operatives in Pakistan and Dubai were helping the funding of the racket.
It had also highlighted how the people sitting across the LoC were using technology to engage in cross-border smuggling.
A survey carried out by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre of the AIIMS, New Delhi on the “Magnitude of Substance Use in India” placed Jammu and Kashmir at the fifth spot with over 6 lakh people affected by drug abuse. The figures had revealed that 90 per cent of the substance abusers fall in the age group of 17 to 33-years.
Pakistan by sending drugs into J&K wants to keep the region disturbed as the drug smuggling has been a part of the proxy war that the neighboring country has been fighting in J&K for the past three decades. It’s unfortunate but true that Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as the smuggling hub of India. The law enforcing agencies are trying their best to catch the drug peddlers and book them but people need to bear it in mind that the menace of drug smuggling and addiction has turned into a monster and it can’t be tamed without the help of the civil society.
