Govt P G College Rajouri celebrates World Population Day

Rajouri ,July 13: The Department of Botany of Govt. P. G. College Rajouri celebrated World Population Day as part of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsava here today.
On this occasion an extension lecture organized under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Javaid Ahmed Qazi, Principal of the college and convenership of Dr. Anwer Shah, Head, Department of Botany. Dr. Ashaq Malik, Director of Research and Development Cell of the College was the resource person on the occasion.
Dr. Malik, through PPT presentation, deliberated upon the audience about the history, importance, opportunities and challenges related to world population that will reach 8 billion this year. The population trend including, reproductive health, life expectancy, education and technological innovations are progressive but global, warming, climate change, loss of biodiversity, clean water & energy, acidification of oceans, desertification, conflicts, violence, discrimination, drugs etc. are the real challenges before humankind today, he underlined. The spirit of sustainable development based on concept of reduce, reuse & recycle, shared humanity, empathy, justice and equitable development can only ensure space and opportunity for every single member of this 8 billion human family across globe, he added.
In his address, Prof. Javaid Qazi enlightened the young learners about the need of bringing innovations and developing responsible behaviors to overcome pressing issues like poverty, hunger and menace of drugs that are biggest obstacles to achieve quality, resilient and dignified livelihoods. The ideals of World Population Day and Sustainable Development Goals can only be fulfilled if everyone acts with responsibility, eco-friendly attitudes and empathy for others, he said. Dr. Qazi appreciated the efforts of Department of Botany to raise awareness about this important day celebrated across globe including India on July 11 every year since 1989.
Prof. Iqbal Raina, Convener Cultural and Literary Committee who was special guest on the occasion also spoke about the carrying capacity of planet and keeping space for other co-inhabitants of mother earth beside human beings. .
Earlier, Dr. Anwer Shah introduced the audience about the programme and conducted the proceedings. Prof. Ghulam Abass presented formal vote of thanks whereas Prof. Aasia Rashid Bhat provided technical support. A large number of students and faculty members participated in the event. Mohd Bashir, Mushtaq Ahmed and Farooq Ahmed cooperated in the organization of programme.
