| Short in arm for Bhalla as Mahant comes in his support | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 9: The Congress candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, Raman Bhalla, has received a shot in his arm when Mahant Manjit Singh, an influential religious leader of the Sikhs in Jammu, announced his support for Bhalla. The Mahant, who has been instrumental in opening an engineering college, educational institutions, and in renovating several Gurdwaras in the Jammu region, has already appealed to the Sikhs to vote in favour of the Congress candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency. Sources close to the Mahant today said that the religious leader planned to repeat his appeal to voters to support Raman Bhalla in other religious congregations during the next three days. Commenting on the support of Mahant Majit Singh, Raman Bhalla said “it is a feather in my cap as there are over 32,000 Sikh voters in my constituency.” He said he won the 2002 election from Gandhi Nagar constituency with the margin of over 10,000 votes because of the support of the Mahant. He said the support of the Mahant “to me speaks volumes about the religious leader’s broadmindedness when the National Conference has fielded a Sikh candidate, T.S.Wazir from the constituency.” Bhalla said that in 2002 election the National Conference had fielded Sardar Harbans Singh who lost when the Mahant had lent “support to me.” The polling in Gandhi Nagar segment and 17 other constituencies in Jammu, Kathua and Samba districts was scheduled to be held on December 24, being the seventh and last phase of the poll process. |
