| Blame Game for Congress Defeat in MP Begins | | | AGENCIES BHOPAL, DEC 9: Following the defeat of Congress in the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, a blame game, on who should be held responsible for the party's loss, has begun. Those opposed to Madhya Pradesh Congress President Suresh Pachouri are of the firm view that he alone should be held responsible for the party's unexpected poor show at the hustings, results of which were announced on Monday. They maintain that Pachouri alone is responsible because he single-handedly conducted a campaign which did not highlight Congress policies and failed to attack corrupt BJP ministers. These leaders also say that as compared to the BJP's ad campaign which was aggressive in nature, the Congress campaign was comparatively very mild. However, Pachouri supporters refuse to accept this stating that since the party had not named a chief ministerial candidate before the polls, no single person could be held responsible for the Congress defeat. They say that there was "collective leadership" in the Congress and hence all leaders must equally share responsibility for the party's loss. But a senior Congress office-bearer said that the loss should be attributed to Pachouri alone. He said that Pachouri is known as a man who has never won an election in his life and added that it would have been unthinkable for him to work for the success of 230 party candidates for the assembly polls. Pachouri detractors allege that had the Congress won the elections, he alone would have hogged the limelight, claiming credit for the party's victory. Since Pachouri would have claimed credit for a victory, he should also have the courage to own up responsibility for the defeat, the leaders said. But Pachouri supporters say that he was handicapped to a certain extent by some senior leaders who campaigned in their teritories and did not allow anyone else to come there. For instance, Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath campaigned extensively in the Mahakoshal region while Jyotiraditya Scindia campaigned in Gwalior, the leaders pointed out. The only leader, who can claim with some justification that his men have won the elections, is Congress General Secretary and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh as 19 of his supporters have been elected as members of the new Madhya Pradesh assembly, the leaders said. |
