Making J&K Green
7/29/2022 11:16:13 PM
The “Green Jammu and Kashmir Drive” launched by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is aimed at inculcating the sense of responsibility towards nature.
It’s necessary to manage the rich natural wealth to combat climate change and ensure a better future for younger generations. Protection and conservation of natural resources and striking a perfect balance between nature and development are important for any place to survive.
During the past 30-years of turmoil natural resources of J&K were plundered by timber smugglers and other unscrupulous elements. After J&K’s transition into a Union Territory on August 5, 2019, the government has emphasized on the reforms aimed at reducing the impact of climate change and overcoming the challenges of the fragile ecosystem.
J&K is blessed with nature’s rich resources, with 54% of the area under green cover. A large population of J&K UT is dependent on forests for their livelihood. The efforts are needed to safeguard the interests of the people whose survival depends on the forests. Panchayati Raj Institutions and Civil Society have to play an effective role as partners of “Green Mission” launched by LG Sinha.
The citizens should understand that nature cannot be preserved without their active participation. The citizens have to lead from the front to save nature and the fragile environment around them.
The Centre has already imposed a ban on the Single Use Plastic (SUP) items. The people need to ensure that they don’t purchase such items that can wreak havoc with the environment. They have to stop using polythene as it’s the major cause of pollution. Citizens need to become responsible and act in a matured manner. We have to preserve the environment for our future generations. If we keep on disrespecting nature the day is not far when nature will have nothing to offer to mankind.
The government has embarked on the mission to bring two-third area of J&K under forest and tree cover and make the protection of natural resources an integral part of the development model. People need to cooperate and ensure that the plans that have been formulated to protect the natural environments are implemented so that our future generations can inherit something from us.
