EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 10: Though the war clouds hovering over the India-Pakistan border have evaporated following crackdown ordered by Islamabad on the top leaders of Lashkar-i-Toiba the level of tension between the two sides is yet to get reduced.
Defence experts said that following the arrest of over 20 top Lashkar men and the order served on keeping the Chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Azhar Masood under house arrest had started diluting the level of misgivings between Islamabad and Delhi. These experts said that whether Islamabad acted under the American pressure or on its own the step taken by the Pakistan Government was appreciable. They said during the rule of Gen. Parvez Musharraf, Islamabad had ordered crackdown on top activists of Lashkar and Al Qaeda but later it was found that the exercise was cosmetic in nature.
It is in this context that Delhi has conveyed to Islamabad that the steps the latter had taken were not adequate. In fact Delhi wants more result-oriented campaign against militant organizations.
Defence experts also stated that the campaign launched by Islamabad against terrorists was just a beginning. They said if such campaign was not sustained, terrorists may not feel the heat of the operations against them because this terrorist outfit and other militant groups had mushroomed in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir.
These experts said that the Indian troops deployed on the LOC have been directed not to lower their guard. They have been asked to carry out round the clock patrolling to prevent infiltration of Lashkar men who, while trying to evade arrest, may attempt to cross in Jammu and Kashmir. According to these experts when Gen. Parvez Musharraf ordered a crackdown on the terrorists two years ago the level of ingress from across the border in Jammu and Kashmir had gone up. This had indicated that terrorists trying to escape arrest had crossed into Jammu and Kashmir.
