| Mehbooba Hopes High Voter Turnout in Next Phases of Polls | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, DEC 10: Expressing satisfaction over the high turnout in the first four phases of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, People's Democratic Party (PDP) today hoped that the people in rest of the constituencies will keep the momentum and turn up in large numbers. "The high voter turn out so far has sealed the success of PDP and we are hopeful that voters in the next three phases will exercise their franchise in large numbers for the success of our candidates," party President Mehbooba Mufti said in a series of public meetings in Tral constituency of Pulwama district. Tral along with 10 Assembly segments are going to polls in the fifth phase on December 13, while the sixth phase will cover 16 Assembly seats on December 17. Polling on December 24 will decide the fate of candidates in rest of the 21 constituencies. Launching a scathing attack on the rival National Conference, Mehbooba said the party was "desirous" of low voter turnout but the participation of large number of people in the next government formation "watered" their designs. Mehbooba, who is contesting from Wachi constituency of Kulgam district, alleged that National Conference manipulated the innocent people of Tral for decades. "NC left people of Tral to the mercy of Ikhwanis (militants turned pro-government gunmen) and task force (special operations group of local police) who have turned their lives into a hell," Mehbooba said. The PDP soon after coming to power (in 2005) provided respite to people during its three-year rule," she said adding "a lot has to be done for further upliftment of the people of Tral". |
