Krishi Vigyan Kendra organises Training Programme on SHGs

Jammu, Aug 3: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu organized one day training programme on “Self Help Groups (SHGs) for Women Empowerment” here today at Dasanu village of Reasi district of J&K. The programme was enthusiastically attended by the number of farm women of the village.
The objective of the programme was to make a better understanding the features and functioning of Self Help Groups (SHGs) for the sustainable livelihood of farm women of hilly areas. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor,Prof.JP Sharma and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.SK Gupta of SKUAST-J. Dr. Banarsi Lal, Sr.Scientist &Head of KVK, Reasi initiated the programme with the warm welcome of participants. He spoke in detail on the different roles of SHGs and their impact in empowering the rural women,boosting employment opportunities and income generation.He also gave a detail view on benefits and principles of SHGs.
He elaborated the methods of formation, management and strengthening of Self Help Groups (SHGs).He added that SHGs have immense scope in hilly areas and they can play a significant role in improving the socio-economic status of farm women. He emphasised on the homogeneity of the group members as homogeneity is helpful to sustain and stregthen the groups. He guided the participants on proper record keeping, internal lending, repayment ethics and financial services among the Self Help Groups(SHGs). Besides it the participants were guided on the income generation activities.
He stressed on agri-entrepreneurship among the rural women and also discussed on women empowerment. He guided the participants on spices processing,aonla candy making, juice making, pickles making, jam making etc. and motivated them to produce the value added products from spices,fruits and vegetables of commercial level so that they can generate more income and employment in rural areas.
He emphasised on the attractive packing, labeling and branding of the products for the better returns. He also discussed on eco-friendly farming and suggested that by growing the organic vegetables commercially women farmers can generate extra income.
The participants showed keen interest in the programme and asked certain quarries which were answered satisfactorily by the officials in a satisfactorily way. Smt.Sunita Devi, an awardee farm woman of the area also shared her experiences on value addition in fruits, vegetables and spices with the other participants and showcased her value added products. The programme was assisted by Sh.Manohar Lal and concluded by Dr. Banarsi Lal with the formal vote of thanks.
