Anti-terror agency likely soon: Chavan
12/11/2008 12:10:40 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Dec 10: The Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office and Congress General Secretary in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Prithvi Raj Chavan has said that the much talked about Federal Investigation Agency to exclusively deal with terrorism is soon likely to be a reality as he hinted at a bill to this effect being moved in the Parliament in the current session.
Upbeat over the outcome of the recently held Assembly elections in Delhi and Rajasthan, Chavan, today hoped that like Delhi and Rajhistan, the people of Kashmir would also vote for the Congress because of its focus on development and peace.
Interacting with reporters at the party headquarters here, Chavan said that the proposed Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)to fight the Terror outfits more affectively, would be a reality soon.
"We have now the CBI which can't go to states unless State Governments call it. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will be able to investigate certain crimes immediately. Normally what happens is that the CBI is involved in the investigation long after the crime is happened. By that time proof and evidence are not there. So, it will be on the pattern of international terror fighting agencies," Chavan said.
"We will take the best practices from the other countries, will propose a legislation or we will do it by executive order, but you will soon see the contours of that agency unfold," he added.
When asked whether the government is satisfied about Pakistan's action against terror outfits, Chavan said: "Unless Pakistan stops all training camps, stops funding terror organizations and if their various agencies within the state give us confidence that they are serious, we will not believe them."
As a matter of goodwill, they must handover our criminals who are our citizens, who are wanted for a crime against humanity and involvement in terrorism, which have been committed here and against whom legal proceedings is going on. Those criminals must be handed out to us. This is a very emphatic demand by our Government," Chavan asserted.
