Be Cautious

There has been a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir during the past few days. On Saturday 796 more people tested positive for the virus thus taking the total number of positive cases in the Union Territory to 46,9041.
According to the doctors and other experts the prevailing variant of the Covid-19 is not that severe and people are recovering within a few days. It’s causing severe infections in the people who are unvaccinated. Experts are urging unvaccinated people to come forward and take the Covid jabs as the vaccines are the biggest shield against the virus.
J&K is already witnessing a fourth wave of the pandemic but the experts are of the opinion that the virus has lost its sting and is not that dangerous anymore.
While the cases this time round have low severity, there are rightly calls for caution and alertness. While it’s true that the majority of those testing positive are reporting mild symptoms with very few instances of hospitalisation, it should not lead to disregarding calls by public health experts to go back to observing safety protocols. There is every chance that many infected patients are going unchecked because of low testing. Ones who are self-testing themselves in homes are not even reporting it.
According to the experts there is no need to panic but throwing caution to the wind could be jeopardizing. There is a need to realize that Covid-19 will continue to be a part of the environment. The Omicron and other of its sub-variants can re-infect any vaccinated person and taking chances is ill-advised. People need to avoid being casual and careless about anyone falling sick and seek immediate medical assistance. People with low immunity have to be protected and transmission curtailed. It would be sensible for those in the high-risk category, especially, to avoid crowded places, wear masks and maintain hand hygiene.
People and the administration need to move in such a manner so as not to lose the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic.
The experts are unanimous that the Covid appropriate behavior as recommended by the World Health Organisation will go a long way to contain the spread of the disease. People should restart wearing masks and adhere to other simple Covid protocols that had become accepted behavior not so long ago.
