| Entire nation united in pain | | | | It is being repeatedly said these days that nothing can unite people like fear does. Common pain makes people to forget all differences and join hands to seek remedy. There is no doubt that the Indian nation now stands united against the scourge of terrorism appears more determined now than ever in defeating the extremism. This view got a reassurance after today’s discussion in Parliament on terrorism, particularly the debate on country’s response to November 26 attack on Mumbai. Watching the debate live on television it appeared that as if there was only single party in House and only single voice –we are together in defeating terrorism. It was the maturity of Indian political class at its best when members of the Parliament left behind their party interests and stances to send across a clear and loud message that the very idea of India has been attacked by terrorists and entire India is one in defending the nation. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior BJP leader LK Advani set an unprecedented trend in offering unconditional support to the government in fighting terrorism. Advani’s speech left an indelible mark on the psyche of Indian political class as he sought to convey that no consideration –party, religion, region, caste or language –should come in the way when question if about defending idea of India. One can only hope that other leaders of BJP, known for spewing venom and looking for political gains out of every crisis, emulate Advani for the rare political sagacity he showed today. One after the other as members rose to speak in the Lok Sabha the idea of political parties was completely blurred and it was only the idea of India seen in the House. This is perhaps the only approach India can handle its challenges. A decisive time has reached when country should come with a determined response to terrorism and assure its people that they were safe and secure. Terrorism is something no more specific to any particular region as it has become a global phenomenon. Along with many other countries, India has long been a victim of this deadly disease but its dangers came to be known only when the United States of America was attacked. Post-Mumabi attacks, which against attracted the world attention; every India has been left with one single thought –why India is a perpetual target of terrorism. Particularly when people think that there has never been any incident of terrorism in America after 9/11 and in Britain after 7/7 then what allows terrorists to make a choice of venue and timing of their own to attack anytime and anywhere in India. Perhaps a matching response with a national consensus remained missing from the discourse. It is therefore encouraging that the entire political class has stood up together to fight terrorism as a national challenge. Another good things comes out from today’s debate that both opposition and ruling parties have clearly sought to delink terrorism from Kashmir issue so that the international community is no more left to succumb to diplomatic blackmail of Pakistan. |
