| South Kashmir contenders on spree to woo KP voters | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 12-Muslim candidates from various constituencies in Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama and Kulgam districts have begun making last minute efforts for wooing migrant voters living in Jammu. These candidates from Kashmir have, infact, launched door to door campaign in Muthi, Mishriwalla and Purkhoo migrant camps and in non- camp areas in the city’s outskirts. Some of the candidates have spent days together in Nagrota migrant camp in recent days. When the election schedule was announced senior leaders of the Congress, the National Conference, the PDP and the BJP were seen frequent visitors to the Kashmiri migrant camps. Over half a dozen candidates contesting as independents too have visited these camp areas with the purpose of garnering the support of migrant voters. Some of the Pandit candidates, fielded either by the BJP or by other smaller political groups, besides those contesting as independent candidates seem to be crest fallen. Since 1996 it is for the first time that more than 15 Pandit candidates are in the field. The number of Pandit candidates had swelled this time because they had believed that as a result of very poor voting percentage they stood a chance to win with the support of migrant voters. Their calculation has gone wrong after polling in over 20 constituencies in the Kashmir valley witnessed heavy polling. The Muslim candidates, who were interviewed, said that since each constituency had more than eight to 10 candidates in the field, votes will get split and chances of victory for the one who would secure sizeable support from migrant voters were bright. They said this was their purpose of visiting the camp and non-camp areas for mustering voters support.
