| Separatists critical of Islamabad’s crackdown on terrorist outfits | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec12- Kashmiri separatists, especially those belonging to the camp of hardliners, has started criticizing the establishment in Pakistan for having ordered a crackdown on the activists of Lashkar-i-Toiba.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads Tehrik Hurriyat Conference, has blamed Islamabad for having buckled under the US pressure.
He has stated that it was unfortunate that those who were engaged in jehad were being imprisoned. Geelani had been critical of Pakistan Government when Gen. Parvez Musharraf was the president. Then he would blame Musharraf for having given weightage to trade and travel instead of the Kashmir issue. He had also accused Musharraf of having buckled under the US pressure by allowing the American troops to set up their bases for launching ground and aerial attack on the Talibans in Afghanistan.
Separatists are critical of Asif Ali Zardari and other ruling leaders because they fear that crackdown on terrorist groups could starve militants, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, of moral and material assistance from Pakistan. However, pro-Pakistan elements in the Kashmir valley are “stupefied” and are not prepared to comment on Islamabad’s crackdown on terrorist outfits. They are unhappy but at the same time they do not want to see Pakistan’s security and solidarity getting jeopardized.
Intellectuals among the separatists are of the opinion that if Pakistan does not follow the guidelines laid by the US Government and the UN Security Council, Islamabad may have to face the wrath and economic sanctions from the developed nations .It is in this context that Islamabad has preferred to accept dictation from the US administration so that continued economic aid from the USA and other countries help Pakistan to come out of the economic stringency.
