JAMMU, DEC 12: Expressing concern over the misuse of Red Cross emblem in the State, Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Jammu has started an emblem campaign to protect its dignity from being misused by various professionals and institutions.
Addressing a press conference this evening, Secretary Red Cross Society Jammu Mr Anil K.Padha said that sign of Red Cross on a white background is the distinctive emblem used by the Red Cross Movement in their humanitarian and relief activities during armed conflicts or natural disasters.
Elaborating further, Mr Padha said that it is not the emblem of the medical professionals as commonly perceived and its use is regulated by International and National Laws. The Indian Parliament enacted a law in 1960 which deals with the abuse of the Red Cross emblem and unauthorized use of the Red Cross emblem. There is a cognizable offence for the misuse of emblem and a fine of Rs 500 can be imposed to the erring persons besides the provision for forfeiture of the goods or vehicles on which the emblem has been used.
He informed that Red Cross society has taken several initiatives including educating the general public through media, seminars and workshops. He added that volunteers from various districts of Jammu region have been trained in a one day programme to carry out the drive to dissuade the unauthorized user from using this emblem. A sticker was also released on this occasion as part of emblem campaign.
