| 'India can reach moon, but cannot remove malnutrition': Renuka | | | Agencies New Delhi, Dec 12 "India can reach moon, but cannot remove malnutrition." This is how Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury voiced her lament over the country not paying enough attention to the critical issue of nutrition, especially among women and children. The country needs a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the widespread problem of malnutrition, she said replying to a short-duration discussion on points arising out of Chowdhury's reply on the issue in the Lower House in October.
Pointing out that the government has doubled the allocation for welfare programmes, she said, the states should also be held accountable for not properly implementing such important schemes.
Eleven states in the country have a high density of malnutrition, she said, stressing that it was necessary to strengthen the food and nutrition boards in the states.
"Malnutrition impacts the productivity of the nation," the Minister said, adding there was a need to create awareness among the people about removing micro-nutrient deficiencies and benefits of breast feeding.
Promising to provide more infrastructure facilities at 'anganwadis', she said it was important to address the problem of anaemia among the women as a weak mother cannot give birth to a healthy child.
Initiating the discussion, Hansraj G Ahir (BJP) wanted to know the steps being taken by the government to deal with the problem of anaemia among women and children.
S Sudhakar Reddy (CPI) demanded that renumeration for anganwadi helpers and workers should be increased.
