Crucial fifth round polling today
Mehbooba, Lal Singh among 119 contestants on 11 segments

Jammu, Dec 12: Stage is set for the crucial fifth round of polling tomorrow where Peoples Democratic Party has the challenge scripting its future by maintaining hold on South Kashmir and the Congress has challenge of security its base in Kathua.
Officials said that all arrangements have been made for fifth phase of polling 11 Assembly constituencies of Tral, Pampore Pulwama, Shopian, Rajpora, Wachi, Bani, Bilawar, Basohli, Kathua and Hiranagar spread over 3 districts of Pulwama, Shopian and Kathua are going to polls on Saturday.
Over 5770 polling staff and about 200 companions of security personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth, free and fair elections. The election material including EVMs, poll staff and security personnel have reached the concerned polling station.
In the 5th phase, 8,38,953 electors are registered expected to cast their votes which include 4, 01,833 female and 3,772 service voters. As many as 1,154 polling booths including 65 auxiliary booths have been set. Of these, 626 have been identified as sensitive, 386 as hypersensitive and 142 as normal.
As many as 179 contestants, including five women and 58 independents, are in fray in the fifth phase of elections in the State. Of them, Pulwama district in Kashmir division has the highest number of 73 contestants in fray, which include 21 from Tral, 15 from Pampore, 19 from Pulwama and 18 from Rajpora Assembly constituencies.
Likewise, 40 contestants are contesting from Shopian district, which include 19 from Wachi and 21 from Shopian Assembly constituencies.
Peoples Democratic Party president and Member Parliament Mehbooba Mufti and another Member Parliament Chowdhary Lal Singh are among the contestants. Mehbooba is seeking election from Wachi constituency in Shopian district while Lal Singh is contesting from Kathua constityency.
In Kathua district of Jammu division, 66 contestants are in fray, out of which 11 are in Bani, nine in Basohli, 20 in Kathua, 15 in Billawar and 11 in Hiranagar Assembly constituencies.
In comparison, only 97 candidates were in fray in these 11 constituencies in 2002 Assembly elections. Of them, 3 candidates contested from Tral, 10 from Pampore, 6 each from Pulwama, Rajpora, Wachi, Shopian and Bani, 9 from Basohli, 22 from Kathua, 14 from Billawar and 9 from Hiranagar constituency.
Like in the four phases that went polls in Jammu and Kashmir between November 17 and December 7, 2008, political parties and independent candidates in fray for the 5th phase did hectic campaigning to attract the attentions of electors. As many as 283 large, medium and small election rallies, public meetings and road shows were organized between October 19 to December 11, 2008 by political parties and independent candidates in the 11 constituencies.
