| Militants lying low | | | EarlY Times Report Jammu, Dec 12- The militancy related incidents during the current election year have been minimal as compared to earlier election years of 1996 and 2002. Official reports have revealed that during the current election year there were not more than 600 incidents of violence triggered by militants when against it the number of such incidents was over 3,000 in 2002 and over 5,000 in 1996. These reports indicated that militants had witnessed depletion in their man and weapon power with the result they could not strike against the soft targets. According to these reports, no doubt the security grid in the entire state had been strengthened weeks before the start of the poll process, it was owing to lack of continued moral and material support from agencies across the border that militants were unable to fulfill their assigned task of wrecking the poll process. Besides this, the infiltration rate from across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir has dropped to the zero level during the last 15 days. Senior Army sources said that the post-Mumbai terrorist strike has resulted in sudden drop in the ingress level. The sources said that during the last one fortnight “not a single incident of infiltration bid had been reported from any sector on the LoC.” The state Government sources said that even before the terrorist strike in Mumbai the militancy related incidents had nosedived in Jammu and Kashmir and the downward graph in the terrorist activities had been the main factor behind incident free polling in the 39 constituencies where the poll process was completed in first four phases.
