Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 4: Balwant Thakur the Director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, High Commission of India, Mauritius introduces innovative children's theatre in Mauritius in a massive way. Supported by the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Government of the Republic of Mauritius, this initiative of Balwant Thakur is aimed at introducing children theatre in the entire length and breadth of Mauritius. Under this project twenty directors of Mauritius are being trained in a production oriented workshop with children at IGCIC under the direction of Balwant Thakur. These twenty directors after the completion of their training will be allotted twenty different regions of Mauritius and will be assigned to produce independent children productions. This phase of work will culminate into a mega festival featuring twenty new children's plays incorporating different themes and approaches. In the final phase of the project, each director will be facilitated to stage 5 shows each of their productions in their respective vicinity thus taking the number of performances to 100 (One hundred).
This project was inaugurated at IGCIC in a public function by the Honourable Avinash Teeluch, Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Government of Mauritius who assured all support to this most outstanding initiative aimed at bringing a revolutionary change in the cultural landscape of Mauritius. People out here are highly enthused about this ambitious project of Balwant Thakur. Fact remains that children theatre is not very popular in Mauritius. Majority schools in Mauritius produce and perform heavy texted French plays which hardly suit young sensibilities. Balwant Thakur is the highest Indian honour holder in theatre from India and is known world over for his highly innovative theatre work , specially with children. His plays like 'Mere Hisse Ki Dhoop Kahan Hai' and 'Aap Hamaare Hain Kaun' are the longest living children's plays of India. Immediately after his landing in Mauritius, there has been a huge demand for his work and considering this, the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Government of Mauritius took the lead and approached High Commission of India for sparing the invaluable services of Balwant Thakur in the introduction of children theatre in Mauritius. Experts out here have a firm belief that this contribution of Balwant Thakur is going to turn into a theatre movement in Mauritius which will have a huge impact on the theatre of Mauritius. Balwant Thakur for this superlative service will be remembered by Mauritians for centuries to come.
